Stories & Supper was launched in Waltham Forest in 2017 to challenge negative perceptions of migration, by bringing refugees, asylum seekers and local residents together over food and stories. The aim of their work is to break down barriers, reduce isolation and create spaces of welcome and encounter. 

The group hold weekly creative workshops at Gnome House for refugees, asylum seekers and local residents, where they share stories, write poetry, eat and have fun together. In non-pandemic times, they also host events such as supper clubs, story cafes, and street food and story pop-ups. In 2019, for Waltham Forest Borough of Culture, they published a book of recipes and migration stories, More Than a Recipe Book. They are currently working on an Arts Council funded anthology of refugee writing due to be published in Autumn.

For Leytonstone Loves Film 2019 the collective screened Ugwumpiti, a film by Ethnie Nightingale about Maurice Nwokeji’s experience of coming to the UK as a child refugee from Biafra. This was followed by a panel discussion with Maurice and Phosphoros Theatre’s Syed Najibi about child migration, plus more stories from other members of Stories & Supper.
